Background: The Story of Mercury

Environmental issues impact all of us
. At HVAC Sales & Supply, we are trying to do our part to ensure that future generations don't have to pay for our mistakes.

You can help by properly recovering and disposing of refrigerant, returning old mercury thermostats to our reclamation bins, recycle your batteries, printer cartridges, old cell phones and electronic equipment. One of the biggest impacts we can all have is moving our customers to R-410A equipment.

We have begun efforts to improve our impact on the environment.
Below are some of the initiatives that we have either completed, begun or planning for in the near future...and we are always looking for ways to improve.

We all have a responsibliity to take part in protecting our planet.

In conjunction with the Thermostat Recycling Corp, we have installed reclamation bins at all of our locations. The Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC), a not-for-profit corporation founded and operated by thermostat manufacturing companies, facilitates the nationwide collection of all brands of used, wall-mounted mercury-switch thermostats so that the mercury can be purified for re-use.The TRC collected more than 113,600 thermostats containing over 1,080 pounds of mercury during the 2006 year and expects those numbers to rise dramatically in 2007 and beyond. In 2007, we retrofitted warehouse and showroom lighting at our Senator branch (40,000 sq. ft) with new energy saving fixtures and bulbs resulting in approximately a 37% decrease in lighting costs.

Installed new R-410A high efficiency air conditioning systems at our Thomas Rd and Senator St facilities. Twelve systems, all with environmentally responsible refrigerant.

R-410A benefits at a glance
–Key benefits of R-410A and the air conditioning systems that use it are:
–Higher EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio)
–Enhanced heat-pump performance
–Increased efficiency and reliability
–Cost-effective design
–Proven long-term HCFC replacement capability
–No ozone-depleting chemicals
–Lowest global warming TEWI (Total Equivalent Warming Impact)

Global Warming

  • The 14 warmest years on record have all occurred since 1980. (1998 was the warmest year ever measured globally)

Waste

  • Americans throw away 10 times their own weight in garbage every year.
  • American throw away enough writing and office paper annually to build a wall 12 feet high, stretching from New York City to Los Angeles.

Recycling

  • Recycling is more popular than democracy. A recent survey showed that more people recycled than voted during the 1996 presidential election
  • One ton of paper from recycled pulp saves 17 trees, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 7,999 gallons of water, 4.200 kilowatt hours (enough to heat your home for half a year), 390 gallons of oil, and prevents 60 pounds of air pollutants.
  • Producing a soda can from aluminum uses 95% less energy than manufacturing a can from ore and produces 95% less air pollution and 97% less water pollution.

Forests/Trees

  • It takes 75,000 trees to print a Sunday Edition of the New York Times.

Metals

  • Every three months, the U.S. throws away enough aluminum to rebuild our entire commercial airline fleet.
  • We throw away enough iron and steel to continuously supply all of America's auto makers.

2007 Recovered Paper Annual Statistics

In 2007, an all-time high 56 percent of the paper consumed in the U.S. was recovered for recycling.  The 54.3 million tons of paper recovered equal approximately 360 pounds for every man woman and child in America.
